Halloween
Origin:
The ancient Irish believed that on Samhain, the border between this world and the Otherworld became thin, thus letting spirits pass through to our world. While people welcomed the family ancestors' spirits home, they tried to scare off the evil spirits by wearing costumes and masks. By disguising themselves as evil spirits, the Irish thought they would be able to escape harm.
Children dress up in costumes and ask for candy from neighbors at night. Some visit haunted houses and try to scare others. People also carve pumpkins and put them next to their doors.
Chinese Ghost Month
Origin:
During this month, the Gates of Hell are open, allowing spirits into the world of the living. The spirits spend the month visiting their families, feasting, and looking for entertainment.
Celebrations:
On the first day of the month, people honor the spirits by offering them food, incense, and ghost money. The 15th day of the month is the Ghost Festival, when the ghosts are given a feast. On the last day, the Taoist priests send the ghosts back to Hell.
